AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu Said Telugu Desam Party Will Quit BJP-1

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said two ministers of his Telugu Desam Party will quit the central government on Thursday. The tense ties between allies TDP and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have reached a flashpoint after Naidu’s failed bid to secure special category status for Andhra Pradesh.

Politicians in the TDP say the party had weighed several options, such as pulling out of the NDA, MPs resigning and ministers quitting the government, and it was decided that the divorce should be a step-by-step process. If their demand is not met even after pulling out the ministers, the TDP will consider quitting the ruling coalition.

Two BJP ministers quit from the Andhra cabinet in a reciprocal move on Thursday. The BJP, meanwhile, has also rejected Naidu’s charge that the central government led by Narendra Modi neglected Andhra, saying the Centre not only fulfilled all its obligations but also went out of its way to help the state.

HYDERABAD:  Chandrababu Naidu's two ministers in the central government are yet to resign, but the BJP's two ministers in the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's state cabinet have quit this morning. Mr Naidu had late last night announced his decision to pull out his Telugu Desam Party's ministers from the centre, hours after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley ruled out "special status" for Andhra Pradesh. TDP lawmaker Ravindra Babu told NDTV that the next "logical step" is to exit the BJP-led national alliance NDA, but Chandrababu Naidu seemed to leave options open, saying he would "plan further course of action" based on the Centre's reaction to his decision.

Two BJP ministers in the N Chandrababu Naidu Cabinet, Kamineni Srinivas, Health and Medical Education minister and P Manikyala Rao, Endowments Minister, submitted their resignations to Chief Minister on Wednesday. Kamineni Srinivas said their decision came in the wake of the TDP asking its Union Ministers to resign.

“It is a painful decision. This should not have happened like this. The sentiments of people are important and people feel that Special Category Status is Andhra Pradesh’s right. Our commitment is to the development of the state. I and my colleague Maikyala Rao will submit resignations before the budget sessions starts today,’’ Srinivas said.
